Roof Rats

What Are Roof Rats?

Roof rats resemble Norway rats, but they are smaller—and still pose a big danger to your health. These black rats have brownish-black bodies with lighter undersides. They are capable of growing up to six inches long. They’re also known for having long, scaly tails.

These omnivorous rodents are called roof rats because of their tendency to make their home near the upper portions of buildings, such as roof voids or attics. These pests are invasive and are responsible for a variety of problems in your home, including spreading illnesses through their droppings and increasing the risk of fire in your home as they chew through wood, insulation, and—perhaps most importantly—electrical wiring.

How Do I Know I Have Roof Rats?

Common signs of a roof rat infestation are obvious, such as droppings. In addition, check for gnawed surfaces and exposed electrical wires.
