Desert Crawling Insects

Desert Crawling Insects

The Sonoran Desert supports a remarkable ecosystem that’s home to a variety of common insects. Along with scorpions, cockroaches and termites, Phoenix/Tucson home and business owners often call our pest control specialists for help with these local bugs.

Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are nuisance enough outdoors, but once they transition from outdoors into the house, they’ll make indoor life miserable. Fleas reproduce in huge numbers and ticks can carry disease. If you see fleas or ticks in or around your home, this pest issue is one you’ll want to address ASAP.

Measuring almost 1 inch in length, earwigs sport large tail pincers. These scary pests are harmless to humans but their garden foraging damages young vegetables and flowers. They often venture indoors looking for moisture.

Indian Meal Moths

These moths aren’t particular about the type of stored food products they invade. One female can infest a pantry with as many as 400 eggs in a week or less.

Sawtoothed Grain Beetles

Grain beetles are another common type of Arizona pantry pest. The bugs measure 1/8 of an inch, so they often go undetected until an infestation becomes serious.

Due to their nocturnal habits, these insects multiply unseen in damp areas around drains and inside crawl spaces. As they feed on fabric and paper, the bugs leave behind unsightly yellow stains.

Also known as roly-poly bugs, sowbugs are familiar to gardeners and are considered harmless. However, they tend to forage on young plants and damage tender sprouts.

Yellow Jackets

These aggressive wasps deliver very painful stings. Yellow jackets nesting under porch eaves and inside storage sheds often swarm when disturbed.
