American Cockroach

American Cockroach

The largest species of common cockroach, these pests are big, fast, and omnivorous, eating anything from spilled beer to the binding of books. They are easy to identify and they are a challenge to kill. Burns’ pest experts can identify potential roach infestations and act to eliminate them.

The American cockroach is the largest of the house-infesting cockroaches. They do not limit their infestations to homes as they are often found in alleys, food processing plants, and hospitals. They are reddish-brown in color, have six legs, an oval-shaped body, and can be up to 2 inches in length. They often enter building through drains and pipes and prefer warmer climates. They are extremely contaminating insects as they are known to spread over 33 types of bacteria, 6 kinds of parasitic worms, and at least 7 other types of human pathogens. They pick up bacteria with the spines on their legs and bodies as they crawl through decay and sewage and spread it through surfaces, contaminating as they travel. They are known to pose a threat to those living with allergies and asthma, specifically children.

Ways to protect your home from cockroaches:

  • eliminate food and water sources (ex: trash, standing water, etc.)
  • keep food crumbs off the ground and vacuum underneath furniture and appliances
  • ensure all food, including pet food, is well-contained
  • never leave dirty dishes in the sink
